When searching for the right healthcare, consider the following...

It's important to find the best location for your healthcare needs, or for those of a family member. There are several considerations when choosing the right facility:

Convenient location. Consider the distance of the facility to family members, personal physicians and hospitals.
Reliable referrals. Ask your physician, friends and neighbors about quality healthcare providers in your area. Local affiliates of the American Health Care Association as well as community health departments also have valuable information.
The facility itself. Tour the facilities you are considering and be sure to ask questions. You'll want to know as much as possible about the qualifications of the staff, the variety of services available, facility layout, the dining program, safety features and resident activities.
Payment terms. The facility you are considering must inform you of all services and fees in writing. Speak with an admissions coordinator to learn more about the coverage provided by Medicare or Medicaid, managed care plans or private insurance.
Personal involvement. Whether you or a loved one is considering healthcare services, be sure to include your family in the selection process and encourage them to visit the facility with you.
Long-term care resources. If a family member needs long-term care, there are many excellent resources you can go to for more information including the Medicare's "Nursing Home Checklist" and Medicare's "Steps to Choosing Long-Term Care." You can also visit the American Health Care Association's Web site at www.ahca.org for more information and guidance on selecting a nursing home.
