A good book

Resident John Pittman loves to read, although in the beginning
it wasn’t so easy for him. As a young child, he had trouble reading
and he now believes he may have been dyslexic even though it was
not officially diagnosed. At the age of 8, John started combating
his reading problem with picture books, and soon he was reading his
way through the local library. Out of all the books he read, his
favorites were fantasy and funny stories.
When John was in high school, he saw an advertisement to join
the Navy and receive college tuition. John signed up and received a
full, four-year scholarship to the University of Texas. Graduating
college was an important achievement considering his early
struggles with reading.
Now John reads an average of six hours a day, often reading two
to four books a week. The Book Mobile comes to Golden LivingCenter
– Stroud twice a month and John looks forward to receiving new
books, especially if they are non-fiction, which is now his
favorite subject matter. John has been a resident of our
LivingCenter since May 1, 2009 and we have determined that in the
past year, he has 156 books! (52 weeks x approximately 3 books per
week.)
In addition to his love of reading, John also loves sharing
stories from his life and visiting with his family, who of course
bring him lots of reading material. We are so glad to have John at
Golden LivingCenter – Stroud, he has certainly demonstrated to us
all the simple pleasure that comes from a good book!
